One of the largest kidney transplant centers in the nation, UAB performs more than 300 procedures each year, and was the first transplant center in the Southeast to pursue paired-kidney exchange, a special type of living-donor arrangement.
Blood-type and tissue incompatibility can be barriers to a successful donor-recipient match. However, the UAB Paired Donation Program (PDP) allows incompatible donor and recipient pairs to be matched with other pairs for compatible transplant. This unique program has significantly increased the number of patients who are able to move from organ waiting lists to successful transplantation.
Transplant nephrologist, Vineeta Kumar MD, and transplant surgeon, Jayme Locke MD, discuss living kidney donation and paired-kidney exchange.
